I have a cold I've been battling for about five days now. Yesterday, I finally went to Rite-Aid to buy some medicine. I wanted Advil Cold & Sinus, to be exact.
I looked for it in the regular aisles. All I found was a small sign saying the product was available at the pharmacy counter. So that's where I went to purchase it. I went there and asked for it and hit another snag. I needed my driver's license to buy it. I was in a decent mood yesterday, so I played along. I went out to my car (where I keep my ID), grabbed it, brought it them and they started the transaction.
In addition to an ID swipe, I also had to sign for it (even though I was paying with cash) and print my name and address in their register.
So now I'm mildly curious and annoyed by the whole thing, and I ask why they need all this information. Apparently drug-dealing type people are making meth out of cold caplets these days, and they need a record of who's buying what.
Long winded (as usual), but my question is this:
When is the government finally gonna draw a line on where it sticks its fuckin' nose? I never thought I'd see a day when you'd be screened for buying cold medicine. What's next? A required stool sample when you purchase a book of stamps, on the off chance you might mail a letter bomb?
Things are getting ridiculous. I mean, do we Americans actually have privacy or freedom anymore?
