whats going on with the deal or no deal tv show?

I used to watch the show..then i just kinda stopped. now i'm laid up with knee surgery so i've seen a few episiods and i was curious what was going on with just the regular people opening the cases instead of the models. they also took away the million dollars... i already can figure that one out..bad economy..but did they have to fire the models too, or is this just one of the events that they are doing like they sometimes do, is this permanant?
 
There's 2 versions of the show now. The one you're used to with the models and the million dollar pay off every week, and a shorter daily game with regular people and less money.
