What's going on with my in-built microphone?

I got my laptop for Christmas, and it is used. I am pretty sure it is from about 2002. When I am on MSN, and I try and record something to someone, it just says this;
Your Voice Clip was not sent because no sound was detected in the recording

I have tried a lot of times, and checking drivers and things like that, but I'm not that great with computers. Can anyone help me?
 
try checking your audio properties.
you can check your microphone using a utility in windows known as "sound recorder", you will find this in
Programs>Accessories>Entertainment
