What's going on with my fish?

I have some guppies. Most of them are second generation to me (with two males being 3rd generation). Well I basically started with one red male and a couple of green males and females (at least the red one was fancy tailed, I'm not sure if the others were because I got them from my old roommate). Pretty much all of the second generation males are red (I have one original green male left and some of the females left) but my two third generation males are starting to come out with some purple on them. Even one of my females (second generation) has a mixture of red, purple, and green on her tail. My question is that even though my guppies were either all green or red is it possible for them to be carrying a gene for purple? Is purple even a color choice for guppies?

Also is there any reason that my females keep coming out green (or mostly green) and the males red? I just thought that was odd.
All of my males (except that one) have red and white bodies (the underside is white) and red tails while the females have green bodies and mostly green tails (some have a little red but it's mostly green)
I know it's not ick. I've had to battle ick, fin rot, and dropsy before. Believe me it isn't ick.

Also I had another question. Some of the males are missing chunks out of their tails. At first I thought it was fin rot but it hasn't gotten worse and only the males have been affected. Is it most likely them fighting?
Ya actually regret getting the females except that my supply of fish is getting replenished every so often (they are in a 5 gallon tank and I think because of the size only one or two babies seems to survive every couple of birthings.) One of the 3rd generation males is probably only alive because he was born in the bag on the way home from school and I placed him in a different tank with another young fish back at home. That female didn't make the trip back to school unfortunately.
