Whats gauge wires should I buy for my amp?

I have a 1200 RMS watt amp. I'm kind of new to this sound stuff. Some people have told me 4 gauge, some have told me 8 gauge, and one person has told me 2 gauge. Basically, I'm confused and need your help. If you can, please explain to me why the wires would work best for my system.
