I need a simple multi-IM service client because the people on my buddy list are too dumb to just use a single IM service (they keep bitching about make-believe problems with YIM when everyone knows it's WLM that drops messages and has connection issues). I need a service that's free, NOT spamware with some stupid "trial" or "full" version. I need skin themes (light text on a dark background is both easier on the eyes as well as on my monitor). I need it to not take up a lot of room on my desktop. Seriously, YIM hogs the whole damn screen; it'd spill onto the second monitor if it could and I can't shrink it down enough. Plus which it has to throw spam at me that I do NOT expect from a basic a tool as an IM. I don't want a browser alternative. IM services are a toothbrush; browsers are a shovel. The job does not apply. Browser-based alternatives are for when you're using someone else's computer. Someone who doesn't know that IMs are the fundamental first and foremost tool for communicating via the internet. Preferably it should be simple, in that what some might tout as "features" (group chat, file transfer) are standard and not even referred to as "features".
I tried Pidgin once, but it seemed clunky, ugly, and poorly executed. Something compact, where space is utilized intelligently would suffice. Trillian is very good for space, but Trillian is untrustworthy, as they utilize an invasive auto-update feature that apparently can't be disabled (because, you know, I want every mangy tramp fornicating around inside of my 1s and 0s like a pungent subway rapist) and apparently they believe their ugly, erroneous "themes" which consist of nothing more than blended colors are worth shelling out actual cold hard cash for when I already have to pay for the computer, the internet service, and the electricity. The phrase "Boston Tea Party" comes to mind.
So if whichever one of you is using the brain cell could also get a hold of the iota of etiquette, I'd wholly appreciate an intelligent, human-recommended, non-paid suggestion for an existing IM tool that puts Trillian to shame. You know, more shame than it's already in.
