Whats a solid mountain bike that won't break the bank?

I recently did a number on my mountain bike while out on some trails and know it really wasn't made for anything more than light offroading. I'm hoping to sell that one and find a used mountain bike that I can have some fun with but don't want to spend a ton of money either. What should I be looking for?
 
Diamondback Response..I have it...it is about 350 (i think)...It is a great bike..I have had it for 1 year no problems
 
How much is your "upper limit"? Really would help us help you better. Used anything is subjective since you can find a great deal when the wife cleans the garage out after a post divorce yard sale and then the deals are magnificent. Otherwise you are looking on craigslist or ebay and paying at least half or better of MSRP for mostly second hand junk. If you are talking about $100-300 then you are doomed to less than desirable or slightly better. Over $300 used and you may have something. Solid is anything that isn't dept store bought! Dont be fooled though even the bike shop bikes in the lower price ranges (under $400) should not all be ridden wet and put away dry (ridden hard) as some of the key components are not well suited for hard ridding and even though the frames are good the wheels generally are not. Buyer beware.....ALWAYS! check your specs before you buy for the ridding you intend on doing!
