KP is kitchen patrol.
Unless you're in the field or basic training, services don't do this any longer.
MP is military police.
Cooks are enlisted members and they go from E-1 to E-9.

KP is Kitchen Patrol, MP is Military Police...

MP is a job in the military
KP is a duty that one performs. Cooks do not perform KP, other Soldiers are the ones that have to go and do KP like cleaning pots/pans, mopping the DFAC (Dinining Facility). Essentially all KP has been replaced by full-time civilian employees... even in basic training.

As far as the ranks go... Everybody in the military go through the same ranks. E-1 through E-9 for Enlisted and O-1 through O-10 for Officers. W-1 through W-5 for Warrant Officers (the WO ranks are the only ranks that are different between services)

You may have a different job title as you go up the ranks, but your rank will be the same... A cook E-6 is a Staff Sergeant, an infantry E-6 is a Staff Sergeant
