What's a good word to describe this authors tone in the book I'm reading?

He continuously brings up death. It's not so much grim. (That's the only word that comes to mind...) There is humor involved.
But people dying is the obvious theme of the story.
The book is Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five.
In case anyone is wondering.

Please Help.
