i play guitar and i came up with some pretty cool music but they don't have words. should i have came wit lyrics first and then found music that went along with them?

Yeah, the best thing is to write the lyrics, and then figure out the music.
First you have to worry about your lyrics coming from the heart, your feelings or your life. the best time to write a song is when youre full some kind of emotion, sadness, happiness, anger.
Once you write your song and you feel satisfied, then start with the music. make your song interesting! not somethign that everyon'es heard before. start with a cool, catchy intro that will make the listeners interested in what you have to say.
Also when you're singing your song, sing in different notes, not just one dead line ------------------ experiment with different notes to sing in and keep it interesting. THE KEY WORD HERE IS INTERESTING =)

hope this helps!

There's no definite way to write a song. You can write the music or lyrics first, doesn't matter.

What I do in your situation though, where you have music and no words, is just keep playing it and often random words and phrases will pop up. Then just go from there. I mean, everyone has their own style and methods, but that's just my advice.

Well, what does the melody remind you of? what does it make you feel? It takes great talent to write great lyrics. Maybe you can find a goody lyricist or poet and ask him/her to write lyrics on this topic for that melody. I've met a few rather good poets in my lifetime, people who know their dictionary reaaally well. The thing is, lyrics are really important, now a' days people have really boring lyrics that are shallow and not very rich in meaning. Like very empty and "eh..."
Back in the day people actually had a rich baggage of words and their literacy was much more developed so they could write awesome lyrics and poems. If you can find a good lyricist, that would be great. Or if you think you can come up with something good, I'd advise for you to focus on how the melody makes you feel. Sometimes it comes to you when you least expect. I mean, you might get inspired by something and just start writing. Just keep your mind open...

And by the way, I've heard melodies created first and then people added words for the song because it reminded them of a special something. Other times I've heard great poems with a melody added to the words, creating a song. I think it can work both ways...

;) good luck
