what's a good statrer car to buy?

i'm looking to buy my first car but i'm not sure what to get. i need something used and affordable but not super old and crappy. ( no older than 12 years old)
i want something reliable and inexpensive to maintain but still something kute. something under 12grand would be preferred.

i like suv's and sports cars only. the car also needs to be safe, and nothing nerdy please!
any suggestions???
