Whats a good computer stereo system for music?

I like to write music and play the guitar over a software amp, so it's really important my stereo system has some real punch. I don't want anything weak, I gotta have strong bass and loud and clear sound. Even my friends $400 bose set felt too small for me, like it was trying to put out sound but it still sounded like it was coming from a small box. I had a $350 Midiland system that got blown out fom not being on a surge protector. It worked perfect for me, and I have no idea what to get now. My budget is like $300.

Any ideas?
