What's a better career Decision?

I'm 26, I finally decided I want to go to college for a mechanical engineering degree. in the mean time however, I do need a job, I applied to a couple positions with, 2 different rail road companies. If I get one of the rail road positions, I could earn up to $75k a year, they both offer a benefits package of about $22k a year, from my understanding, plus a retirement package unseen pretty much anywhere else. I also know that potential earnings as a mechanical engineer could be more, (I fully understand there is no guarantee) and I'm not sure what the job market is like for that profession, or what it will be like when I graduate. also I know with the rail road, It'll be on call, but I do have kids, so I don't want to miss certain things because i have to work, and I don't know what the job scheduling would be like as a mechanical engineer. Thanks for reading my long rant, I just need a little help deciding what to do with my future.
