What would you do in this situation?

My sister just graduated from high school and also just had her graduation party. One of the gifts she received was a bunch of medicine (cold medicine, tylenol, pepto bismol, etc), it was from a family friend that has some type of medical insurance where they get a certain amount of medicine for free. This family friend also gives this type of gift for many other events, such as Christmas.

While I think this is a crappy gift, I do think it is useful for college and therefore we shouldn't say anything to the person who gave the gift. My mother, on the other hand, thinks it was horribly rude of them to give medicine and that they are encouraging an addiction to drugs. She has gone as far as to contact the person who gave the gift and tell them how she feels. She has also contacted this person's boss (who she also knows pretty well) to inform them of what happened.

I feel as if my mother is making too big of a deal of this. I do agree that the gift is crappy, but I do also think it is useful for college. This family friend is someone we see often, and I think my mother has made herself look like a fool.

What would you have done in this situation?
