What would traditional Japanese dining culture think of all you can eat sushi?

My friends swear by this all you can eat sushi place in California. And I enjoy sushi/sashimi as much if not more than them and they're California rolls. And I even enjoy eating at other kinds of buffets when in the mood. I just feel that it's wrong to combine the two, so I decline every time they invite.

My question is: has america fabricated this institution for our need to overindulge? Is all you can eat traditionally done?
