What would happen if I release my betta fish out into the wild?

I have a betta fish that is not living a happy life. It just sits at the bottom of its little fish bowl and barely moves. I want it to be happy, but I can't provide for it, seeing as I don't have enough money or room for a proper tank. I'm thinking of releasing it into the lake or a river.
Does anyone know what effect this would have on the environment?
Could it survive?
Would it be detrimental to the other fish living there?

your fish would totally die if you put it in the wild. also, betta fish are not very active fish, so it's normal for them to occasionally sit at the bottom of the bowl. also, how big is your bowl? it could be too small for your little fishy. and finally, don't put your betta with other fish. they bully almost all other fish except for the opposite gender of their own kind.

One of two things will happen.

1 - It'll die, being that it's a slow moving brightly colored tropical fish this is the most likely event.

2 - It'll establish itself and decimate the local wildlife.

NEVER release a pet. We have a great deal of environmental damage because people did just that!

Find him a new home. Ask everybody you can if they would be willing to take care of him properly if you cannot. Try Craigslist and other such sites. If that all fails euthanize him, do NOT release him.

It wouldn't survive...

You should buy a fifty dollar 5 gallon tank, and buy a few tetras or ect.

And make it a small community tank
