What would cause a '95 Buick Century speedometer & dash lights to quit working?

Have a 1995 Buick Century, about 168,000 miles, with non-functional speedometer and temperature gauges. Also, none of the dash warning lights (check engine, battery, etc.) work; Turn signal indicators ans gas gauge still work. Before this happened, I know the check engine light was on - now it isn't. Cruise control is also out, but I assume that's dependent on the speedometer.

Where should I start looking for problems - what is the most likely culprit? Even more importantly - how do I fix it?
