What would be the result of a solar storm as strong as the one in 1859?

Since we didn't have much for electricity or battery-powered handheld devices and vehicles back then, it's scary to think how another strong solar storm could affect our modern technology.

Reading up on the solar storm of 1859, I'm reading this:

"Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed.[4] Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire. Some telegraph systems appeared to continue to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies."

Does anyone have any expert knowledge about this?
 
satellites would crash, ever object with a circuit will fail, cars will stop,emergacyservices will be spread thin, life as well know it will cease to exist.
