last time i did old school they all got ich.

can i can i put them all in a temporary 5 gallon with the water i will be changing and then put in the replacment water in the 20, then put the fish back in the twenty and dump the 5 gallon?

Moving the fish will just stress them out. Leave them in the tank. Once a week, it's recommended you should change out 25% of the water and also do a good gravel vacuum. That shouldn't stress them out much at all.

get a bucket and take out the water you want to change and you dont need to take any of your fish out. just leave them alone in there and just get a big enough bucket that could fit in your tank and take the water out. take the water out, much as you prefer to take out. and now when you are done just put your finger in the tank water to feel the temp ( you have to be good at this ). and now go fill the bucket with new water making same temp as in your fish tank. you might have to turn some warm and some cold water on utill you get the same or similar temp as your fish tank ( i do this from my bathroom shower tap). its very easy and simple and dont worry you wont kill any fish by doing this. but becarefull not to let any soap or liquid go in the water bucket. just fill a water with bucket and add your water conditioners. and put that water in your fish tank after like 1 minute or so. keep repeating this till you fill your tank. but remember its very important to keep the water temp same or similar as your tank water. its ok if its off by 1-2F. now this is the easiest way to change the water and will take you less than 10-15 mins to change the water.

Are you using warm enough water...keeping the temp close to what your removing?
....But no don't remove the fish for a WC only to put them back in the original tank...that will for sure increase the stress...drop some aquarium salt or stress coat during the change.

Yeah I put mine in a separate tank while changing it it's easier and i don't really believe they get stressed if you move them.

when i do the water in my tanks now that i am aware of the causes of ich.. i do a 25-35% water change, use one of the gravel siphons get much of the mess out, put that in one bucket and the clean water in another, my tanks are set at 78 and 84 depending on the tank..i feel the water in the tanks and try to make the tap water match..i have a floating thermometer that i make is really close (1 degree) before starting the h20 change. also i use tetrasafe as it also has a stress coat in it as well as neutralizing all the chlorine, etc in your tap water.
hope this helps:)

Take 1/4 of the water out a week. use a soft pipe and a bucket. Fill the pipe with water put one end in the tank first then put the other end in the bucket *lower than the tank* and the water will drain. Amazing but true. It's the least stressful way.

Hi!
I wouldn't it might to stressful it would be like changing homes each week. I would just use a python to take 25% of the water out of your aquarium. DO it calmly and not just making gravel go everywhere and stuff.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck!
