What would be the best materials to use when making a model volcano explode?

u can use fire crackers which gives out thousands of tiny sparks
u can use sparkles
 
O.K.
i'm doing this project with these kids and i need to know what are the best things to use for a model volcano eruption. i don't mean those "ooze out" type things i mean those pop up in the air type deals.
Please Help Fast!!!!

Ps. it has to be legal
