What would be a reasonable argument as to why fiction books are useful?

I was having a discussion with a close friend of mine, and we had opposing views to the question asked. I claimed they were useful and he claimed they were not, and that if he could, he would demolish them all.
Since then, I've been working on a rebuttal to this, but I want to make sure I get it right so it strikes hard.
Would anyone have any opinions on this, either on my side or his side?
