it depends on the size of the shock. companies measure the size of the shock from eye to eye, which is the distance between the two holes where the shock bolts onto the frame. certain shocks, like the fox DHX line require a minimum measurement of your frame. you'd really be better off using the money for something else like a new wheelset or a new brake setup.
