what would be a good hiking and camping dog?

i live in scotland so it must be able to stand the cold it also should be a good guard dog not that im going to use it for guarding purposes id like a big dog it must be able to carry a bit of Weight on its back where it will carry some treats and a blanket for a night under the stars my first thought was a newfoundland but id like all of you to have your say

st bernard or newfoundland.
just remember its a dog not a pony so not to much weight and also in the old dog days they have problems with their legs since they get so big.
