His birthday is coming up and I want to surprise him. This is my first time cooking for me. What would be the best thing to cook for him. This is part of his gift. Any ideas would be great.

This is super easy and tastes just like the restaurant version of Steak Oscar.

2 steaks of choice
2 packets of hollandaise sauce mix
1 can baby shrimp
1 can crab meat
1 bunch asparagus

Make steak however you know how. (Broil, grill, whatever.) Trim the asparagus and cut into 1" pieces, and lightly steam them in the microwave. Make the hollandaise per the instructions. Add the crab, shrimp, and steamed asparagus. Serve over the steaks.

Serve it with rice pilaf, a green salad, and garlic bread.

Breakfast? Lunch? Or Dinner?

I would suggest baking something - like baked fish, baked chicken or meatloaf.

Baking is the best and easiest way to cook - just make sure that you follow the recipe exactly. Cook a practice meal if you want to be certain that your oven temperature is correct and that the recipe is good.

You should consider meatloaf: use one pound of inexpensive ground beef (20% fat content - do not use 5% fat content), chop up a big onion, add some balck pepper and a little salt, line a cooking pan with foil and bake it at 400 degrees for an hour. It's that simple and it works great. You can add fancy stuff to the recipe, but trust me, a chopped onion pepper and a little salt work great.

breaded baked chicken, lungini, and white sauce. You can make the white sauce easily.
check out some recipes at allrecipes.com they have good easy ones.
another EASY one, if you like seafood is "deb's scallops florentine"
tastes Soooo good, and is an extra special treat.

I'd say pick something YOU are comfortable making as you'll be confident as to how it will turn out. I wouldn't worry too much about what his favorite food is... the fact that you are doing all this to surprise him is very sweet, and it also gives you a chance to show off a bit.
