What would be a good first car?

for a 17 year old?
I was thinking a used Volkswagon Golf (would that be a good car to save for?)

The car must be for England, UK
This is for when I learn to drive in 2010 :)
 
a volkswagon golf is a good car.. but the insurace is pretty expensive because the smallest you can get is a 1.4 litre engine... if u want something that has cheaper insurance your better of gettin something lyk a vauxhall corsa or a vw polo... i dont knw wat your budget is but if insurance isnt gonna ba problem.. another alternative to the golf would be an Astra or a Honda Civic..
 
May be a bit exspensive on insurance ask your Instructor for what they reccomend failing that look out for cars in a low insurance group then work out which suits you best - dont rush anything otherwise its an expensive mistake take your time
