I have a Trek 7200 that I use all around the city - it's a "hybrid" - sort of halfway between an off-road bike and a road bike, good all around for any kind of riding (but not great for any one thing). I would not hesitate to recommend Trek - mine has been reliable, tough and durable, and comfortable to ride.
They have a full range of bikes for women, and a pretty big range of prices and types, ranging from beach cruisers to top of the line mountain and road racing, with everything in between. Which ones you should consider would be driven by budget and what kind of riding you expect to do. Check the link for information on their women's bikes.
