What would America be like if more value was put into education than sports...

...and entertainment? Now we all know that American culture places way more value into sports and entertainment than education. Just imagine for a moment if that was switched around. What would America be like if more value was placed in education than sports and entertainment.

When you turn on the television, you would see headlines for chess players, spelling B's in elementary schools, classical ensembles being performed in musical halls, scholarships being granted to the bright, etc. Imagine that all of this was the big hype in America, replacing all the media coverage you normally see about celebrities, movies, rock concerts, and sports. So much value would be placed in education and the bright intellect.

What would America be like if this were the culture of the country?

It sounds good to me. Except who's values are you talking about?

Monetarily speaking, yes more money would be great. However what kind of educational products will be brought into school?

Who will set the standards in the schools? Those who do this currently are failing.

Great question, Andy. We would rank higher in the world for innovative scientists, explorers and inventors. If you could only get the media to see this as beneficial.

Hollywood values= oral sex and Sodomy on drugged 13 year olds.Just ask Whoopee Goldberg. You raise a great point,we are in alot of trouble and Morality is the reason why.Idolatry is what the majority of Americans are guilty of.Certainly not being Workaholics or Learnaholics.

Sports, movies, and rock concerts are what the people want. To put it into a mathematical formula, say consumer desire=x, education=e, and money=m. M-X=E

BORING!!!!

I'm being very honest. Our country would be so freaking boring as hell. I'm glad it's not like that thank god!

edit:
whats with the thumbs down? it's so true. americans want to see sports, action, entertainment, something that amuses them. bright people are boring. sorry, but they are.

I don't really follow... USG doesn't put a dime into sports - so you must mean the American consumer. The average cost to a consumer per year at a university is like 35,000 a year. That's obviously much more than any one person spends on football jerseys and movie tickets. So it's not dollar values you are talking about.

Are you suggesting then that because we find the Olympics more entertaining than a spelling bee that we are somehow flawed culturally?

Step back off this one and consider a more realistic perspective.

Wow.. wouldn't it be nice. What a sane and sensible idea.. you better hide... government does not like people who have good ideas!

what. you mean you don't support pansy arsed athletes who can't attract enough support from consumers to pay for their ball playin' and instead have to rely on socialism and public subsidies.

now c'mon. what b the matta with yo' brain:)

It would be a much better society in which to live, this is why the powers that be would never let this happen. Sports and entertainment serve the purpose of distracting the masses from their subjugation at the hands of elitist corporate titans.
In fact, throughout the history of western culture academic advance among the general population has been viewed as a threat to those who rule.

because nobody cares

and if nobody cares, they aren't going to spend their money on it.

i'll never pay $50 for tickets to a spelling bee

^^^ And hopefully not poisoning other country's children...

If the value was put into education then we would not have entertainment or sports because we are a country of extremes. We do not deal in a gray area its all one way or the other.

To be honest, those with any smarts know that is the America that we had, instead of this crazy mixed up country that we have now. If it continues going down the road to hell, we will be worse than a third world country. Those who sold us out will have spent their day in the sun, and their descendants will reap whats been sown.
