What word would use use to describe this situation?

I can not for the life of me think of the right word. would would you call if if your child came up saying it was going to snow (you live somewhere warm) and you say "oh yes, I'd heard that too!" or "Really? That's awesome!" or something. I keep wanting to say patronize, but that's not the word I'm looking for.
