what will jail breaking my ipod do and should i do it( and how?)?

i want to get some paid apps but i don't want to pay. i heard jail breaking lets you get free apps....i really want the nazi zombies app does jail breaking let me do this??i also heard you can downgrade to 3.1.2 software to be able to do this... please give me directions if you can to jailbreak my ipod in your answer too.

P.S. i have an ipod touch 1st gen and the latest software(3.1.3)
 
Honestly I jailbroke my ipod awhile back and found that the free apps on itunes are aloooooooooooot better then anything you get from it being jail broken in regards to how well they work and the amount... except for maybe tetris aha
