I'm not expert in debating in person, but I go on a lot of msg boards and debate. I'd love to debate with people in person, but people get so offended so easily since most debates for me is about current events (politics).
It really depends on who, how you debate, the topic being debated, and environment. Debating with the right people, (meaning mature, experienced in life [generally], open minded, respectful to all opinions, having proper communication speech skills, ect.), in the right environment, it can be a very interesting debate. In learning basis, I'm not sure since I'm not a teacher of any kind, but as a former team leader for a online gaming group I welcomed mature debates about what the group was doing, and I then learn a whole lot on how to make strategies/tactics that I wouldn’t have thought of. Having a different view helps sometimes.
