what was the space event that made electronics malfunction 5 or 6 years ago?

i remember hearing of a space event that caused a lot of electronics like cell phones, credit cards, ect. stop working, i was too young to know about it at the time but im doing a speech on the dangers of space to the earth and would like to know what this event was
 
Large coronal mass ejections can be responsible for electrical problems on Earth. I don't know of the exact event you speak of, though.
CMEs happen when the Sun spews off a lot of energy (a LOT of energy) all at once and the particles head towards Earth.
