What was the purpose of the tree of good and evil in the Garden of Eden?

No cynical answers please. Would like well thought out answers.
God let Adam and Eve "RULE" the earth. God let Adam even name all of the animals. Basically that is a form of kingship.

God put the tree of good and evil to remind the people, "I am your king."

Although he let Adam rule over the earth, he asked Adam of only one thing,
to know that he is king, to not eat from the tree of good and evil.

Since Adam disobeyed and wanted his eyes to open up and "be smarter, more knowledgeable" like God is, he failed.

Because he failed, God had to remove Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden so that they could eventually die. The reason behind this is because if they lived eternally with sin, this would be more than torture for Adam and Eve. To live eternally with sin is unbearable. So God allowed death so that after death, we may be able to be with God in a place where there is no more sin.
 
It was a cruel joke played by God. God wanted to mess with humans, but didn't want to directly do it, so the tree was put there, right where the humans would see it, and to make sure something would happen, specifically pointed out that tree as the one to leave alone (it became a target, which is why Satan took the form of the snake, and told Eve to eat the fruit from it). If God had not bothered to mention the tree, it would have been left alone.
 
it was to see if you adam and eve would obey gods command not to eat form the tree. he wanted to see if they would be obedient to him, but since they were not thats why we inherited sin and death from them. but jesus died for our sins so he can give us a second chance to listen to god, those who listen means everlasting life and those who dont means death.
