What was the last good season of Simpsons before the decline?

I want to start collecting Simpsons on DVD, but I have no idea which season I should stop at. I definitely want to own all the classic seasons, and the newer stuff I'm content with only seeing once.

But the problem is, which was the last well-liked season with consistently great episodes? I honestly have no clue.

Some people have said Season 7, others Season 10...but I don't know for sure.

As said, if I were to stop collecting Simpsons DVDs at some point, which is the last season you recommend I purchase?

To me, the last season with every single episode being above average to excellent was season 8 (yes, I liked "The Canine Mutiny"). But season 9 was almost as good. Season 10 was when it started to get less consistently solid, though there are still some funny episodes in there.

So I guess I'd say stop after buying season 9... season 10 if you're feeling adventurous.

There's some really good stuff in season 9 that makes me unable to dismiss the entire season. However, in my opinion the last season I'd label "classic Simpsons" would definitely be season 8. Some of my all-time favorites are in this season, not the least of which being "Homer's Enemy".

So yeah, season 8.

I think most would agree that 13 is going a bit too far. I'd agree with DarthGonzo with 9 being the last truly great season, with 10 having some good ones that I'd say are worth getting.

This.

I noticed how little my laughs and how the subtle, clever humors were dwindled by the time Season Nine/Ten-ish rolled about. When I grabbed Season 11 for the sake of completion, it was obvious how inferior the quality was to the older seasons.

I have all the DVDs up to Season 11, which has a few good episodes so it was worth getting. I'll probably stop there though. As for season 12, the only episode I liked was the one where Lisa camps out on a tree and Homer says, "Unless" a few times. "It was finger ling ling good."

Well, looks like I'm getting up to season twelve, then.

I agree with pretty much everybody that the golden years were seasons 1-9, but I'm probably going to purchase up to season twelve because, as much as I hate to admit it, "NOOO! It was finger ling-ling good!" is my favorite Simpsons line ever. I happened to like that season a lot, so I'll likely pick up through season twelve. I doubt I'll buy anywhere beyond that.

When the decided to make Lisa a liberal wacko, killed off Maude Flanders and ended the relationship with Mrs Krabappel and Skinner after SEVEN LONG YEARS!

I still like the show, but IMO it started to decline after season 13 with "Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge". that was the last of the terrific seasons.

I couldn't have put it better myself. The Simpsons had pretty much 9 seasons of gold. Myself, I don't purchase the season sets of The Simpsons since it airs a half dozen times a day, and I think that it probably always will. But If I were to buy the season sets, I'd probably stop after season 10 since that would make a nice round number.

I'd say season 7 (though noticed a change in tone starting with season 6, to be honest); seasons 7 and 8, the misses started to grow more than the "hits", and by around 2000 (season 10/11?), I'd given up on the show entirely.

I'd rather have 6-7 decent seasons (with a few misses), than 22 seasons of which the majority is mediocre-to-unwatchable... "quality over quantity"... but tell *that* to Fox...

Lisa was always a liberal, right from the beginning, just like liberalism has always been the overall political stance of the show as a whole. She just started getting more annoyingly preachy as the seasons went on, and so did the rest of the show.

The same thing kinda happened to South Park, only it gradually started preaching its (relatively) right wing politics in a more direct and preachy way.

This is true, but at least they made it clear in "Cartoon Wars", that they're pretty much like that, when they made the comment that people are allowed to like Family Guy.
