What was the initial cause to remove prayer from schools?

I was wondering because as far as I know, removing prayer from schools violates the 1st amendment in the constitution. Freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
 
well, most people say its because it offends other people if they don't believe in christianity. Some say that whoever brought up the case just wanted money!
