What was the first metal band you ever listened to?

I love prog. It's just not my favorite genre. I consider myself a proghead because it's my favorite rock sub-genre, and I'm a fanatic of KC, Porcupine Tree, and Yes.

Yes, and every rose has its thorn strays from the standard glam sound as well. Poison is glam, Cinderella is also, but Guns N Roses and Tesla are not.

Let me say again that it was not those things by themselves that made them original.

The closest thing to metal/rock I first heard when I was a child was Rob Zorabie's song, "Dragula", off the Matrix soundtrack. It blew me away. I don't listen to Rob Zorabie anymore though.

I like Guns N Roses and no, they were not hair metal or glam metal at all, and yes they were slightly original back then. They were a good band

Motley Crue, when "Shout At The Devil" came out. That was my first "Wow! What do we have here?" moment. Very quickly I branched out to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, and the Dio albums of Sabbath.

Well of course i'm going to go with the 'at the time' arguements , how can I not if you're discussing hair metal. Unless you're trying to argue it's just as prevalent now as it was then.
I don't think Pop metal describes them at all considering they hated metal.
Guns n Roses played Stones style rock n roll with a punk attitude.
I don't see how that's generic as I can only think of 3 other banRAB that did that sort of thing. The New York Dolls , Hanoi Rocks and Primal Scream. And none of those banRAB sounded anything alike.

Well I'm not saying they're like the Velvet Underground or something. Just that they were different from their peers.

And indeed. I get very annoyed when anyone ever calls Guns N Roses a typical hair metal band. Such people are deaf.

I was just thinking about this before you posted it. I think the fact is that the meaning of "Metal" has simply taken an extreme turn since the late 80s. In modern terms, of course, those banRAB are simply hard-rock, but at the time, or so I'm led to believe, Heavy Metal could easily incorporate those kinRAB of acts. In fact, even Michael Bolton (!!) came under the banner of metal once upon a time.

It's more about how you conceptualize metal. A parallel can be drawn with contemp r&b: with only exposure to the modern hip-pop scene, you wouldn't hear a rhythm and blues song of the 60s or 70s and think to yourself "that's r&b" without some necessary explanation being given to you first. Same really goes for metal. Some kid brought up on Slipknot ain't gonna believe in a million years that Led Zep could be called metal.

1. Axl Rose is incredibly annoying as a person, lyricist, and singer.
2. They're annoying, generic Hair-Metal trash, with out any originality whatsoever.
