What was the first film you ever saw on VHS?

LOL. Xtro was the first "18" film I saw at the cinema.

We thought it might be good because it had the tag line "Not All Aliens Are Friendly", an obvious riposte to "ET" which was still playing the cinemas in 1983.

I was 16 at the time and it felt very good getting into an 18 movie without being challenged.

It would have been the early 80's and we had a Ferguson Videostar - the huge, top-loading silver monster.

I can't remember what I saw first, but my sister and I managed to see quite a few of the so-called "video nasties" before the BBFC clampdown in 1984.

The only thing nasty about them was the quality of the film making, which was p*ss poor for the most part.

I remember the possessed action man was cool and i have a recollection of some poor bird stuck on a wall giving birth to alien eggs (hmm familiar) but even at the tender age of 10 or so I thought it was rubb-ash (as Vicky Pollard might say). I saw Aliens (18) at 14, does that make harder than you?
;)

The Omen, my sister's boyfriend (at the time) recorded it off the telly in 1982. Didn't get to see it until I got a VHS machine of my own later in the year.

ps. I still have the machine & it still works!

I'm pretty sure the first one I saw was Stir Crazy.I loved it and I now have it on DVD all these years later.

I Also watched Airplane.Must have watched at least three times and found several new jokes every time.I still watch it in bits when it's on the box and it's still pretty enjoyable.

And I remember I had a pretty posh VCR.Even had a remote control with it....a ridiculously long black cord that you plugged into the front of the machine, and threatened to trip you up every time you got up to walk around the room!

I remember when my aunt and uncle got their first video player. Wanting to impress, they invited my mum and us kiRAB to watch a movie, however I've since forgotten what it was, only that it was a kiRAB movie...
Then I was encouraged to play behind the sofa while Mum, Aunt & Uncle, 2 older cousins and my big sis watched the next movie. The grown ups tried to keep me entertained with games, etc, but my sis undid all their efforts by repeatedly calling out "Peter, take a look at this", etc....
They were watching a pirated copy of "Dawn of the Dead"!
I HAD NIGHTMARES FOR MONTHS!!!!!!!!

That's big sisters for you!

Xtro was pretty awful, TBH, but it was an exciting experience for me, being my first 18 movie.

Did you see Aliens at the cinema? If so, then yeah, you're harder than me. ;)

I think the Blues Brothers was either the first or the most memorable first. We just watched it over and over again and I still really like the film.

I rented my first VCR just before Christmas 1979, It was a Ferguson top loader, It sounRAB daft now but i remember how difficult it was to find any blank tapes, I had to visit 3 towns before i managed to get a 2 hour one to add to the 3 hour one which came with the machine,

Also when i rented the machine they were giving away The Sound Of Music as some sort of special offer, So that was the first film i watched.

We had one of the first top-loading Fergusson VHS machines (based on a JVC model) with the large piano keys that physically engaged the tape when you pressd them down. It had one timer that would simply start the tape drive at the appropriate time so you had to engage the play and record levers after you'd put it in timer mode.

I remember hiring Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Elephant Man early on but not too sure which came first. Hiring a video was a major event so frienRAB would come round.

I also remember going round to a friend's to see Zombie Flesh Eaters on Betamax.

E180 VHS tapes cost

Snap!

We got our first video in November of 82. It was a Ferguson top loader. It broke down over Christmas,we could start watching a tape and after a while it would randomly pause playback, stop or go into fast-forward. Got the money back and in January 83 bought a Sharp which lasted quite a while. Just thought and worked it out, currently on my sixth VCR,the two mentioned above, then a Hitachi and then three Panasonics.

Mine was GHOSTBUSTERS! That must have been in 1984 on the old Videostar, remote on a wire as Peter Kay would say!
There was a 3 week wait for the movie on the list, none of this "if we aint got you get it free" rubbish :D
We bought a videostar for a quid in our shop for a laugh, it weighs a ton! It makes a good door stop.

My dad got out Flash Gordon. We were one of the only houses in the street toown a VHS Recorder. It was an old fashioned TopLoader with big chunky buttons at the front. Beta Max were pretty popular also then.

Actually it was one of those zombie flesh eater ones and at the time I was only about 9 or 10...

My Dad had one of those video recorders the size of a bus (lol) with the wired 'remote' control.. It was all new technology in those days... :D
