The farthest hump as a unit was 25 miles with full combat load. Certain units do these humps to get qualified for SOC before you deploy. The battalion must complete this hump in 8 hours. You get a 10 minute break every hour. This means you walk at about 3.0 miles per hour.'
The work up to this annual hump was the real test. We started at about 2 months before doing a hump every other week. We did a 8, 12, 15, 18, and a 20 mile hump to prep for the 25 miler.
We did many humps where we never kept track of our distances while out in the field. These were also alot of fun as you may do 2 miles but it was through mud or up a steep hill or at 0300 in the AM. Distance is not always the painful thing in humps.
Your pack weighs about 50 pounds. Then you add your gear that you wear and water and then you are talking about good times. If your a mortarman you carry your mortar, if your a radio man then you carry a radio and so on.
