What was the civil war in a sentance or two?

I know what it was, don't worry. haha, I'm writing an AP US history thing, and if someone could sum it up for me what it basically was in a sentance it would be REALLY helpful! thank you!
(in terms of the south's secesion)
 
The civil war, which lasted from 1861-1865, was basically a war between the north and the south in the United States as a result of differing cultures in the country. There is a misconception that the war was solely caused by differing views on slavery, however it can be proven that problems started far before then.
