what videos can i use with sony vegas 10?

i bought sony vegas, but when i try to open or import any video files, it says "Warning: An error occured while opening one or more files. The file is an unsupported format." I have tried .avi, .MSWMM, .wmm, and .mp4 and it always gives me that message. What video formats does this program support? Do I need to use HD videos? I only have SD videos. Thanks in advance for any help!
