what version of iTunes will sync and transfer music to iPhone 3g...?

... with version 4.1 and modem firmware 5.14.02? I tried iTunes 9.2 but for some reason I was unable to transfer music onto the iphone but I was able to before. I rebooted my computer and am only now trying to get this to work. It has worked before in the past so i am confused, because for me this should work but i was unable to move music onto the phone. it asks if i want to update but i do not want to do that because i am waiting a jailbreak and unlock for the phone, is there by chance a different version of iTunes i need to get or do i need to do something in the itunes i have now? i am downloading iTunes 9.2 again to try it but i am against updating the phone in it's current condition, any solutions? thanks to anybody that may be able to help me, i hope i can figure this out, would resetting the phone work? i know i won't lose data doing that... thanks...!
