We want to make a garden in our backyard, but don't know which vegetables to grow. We want to grow regular and cherry tomatoes, but other than that we're not sure. We live in the pacific north west, so I don't know if the cold whether will be a problem or not. It gets pretty warm in the summer though. We'd also like to grow sun flowers.

I live in the pacific northwest, too. Tomatoes are a good start. Lettuce likes cooler weather and can be sown as soon as the soil isn't frozen. There are A LOT of different vegetables you can grow. A good rule of thumb is to plant what you will eat, otherwise you will be giving it away or throwing it away. Finding what zone you live in will give you a good idea when to plant your veggies so the frost won't do them in before they can get started. You might want to keep a gardener's journal to keep track of what worked, what didn't, what you liked, germination dates, etc. Experiment and have fun. Good luck!
