What valve lift for chevy 350 camshaft?

I am so confused with the intake/exhaust lift sizes for camshafts. I am building a chevy 350 (small block 1st gen) that will have factory heads and I want a high performance cam and like the rough idle. The engine will be a daily driver. How do I determine how much lift I want???
 
If you want to run on pump gas you don't want to go any bigger the .500 lift.
If you call eather Summit Raceing or Jegs They will take the time to talk you through it.
