What type of water should I put in a new fish tank?

I am about to buy my first fresh water fish tank and was wondering what type of water to put in it. Can I take the water right from my well, (the water where I live is relatively hard but drinkable) or should I put purified drinking water in the tank?

If it makes any difference, the tank will be 6 gal. and there will be no live plants in the tank and it will hold about 3-6 tetras and maybe a piece of driftwood from my lake (which I heard the tetras like but raises the ph level?)

Any and all information is welcomed.

Thank you!

Plain tap water.
put the thing together, add the water, then let it bubble for several days. This will get rid of chlorine, and allow the ph and bacteria to settle down.

suggestion: Crawdads instead of fish?

Also, get a library book and read! Fish books are fun.

It really doesn't make a difference.

If I were you, I would just run six gallons of whale water, and put them in the room where you plan on placing your fish tank, and let them get room temperature.

I see no harm in doing that.
Thats what I do with all three of my fresh water aquariums!

I would use spring water, from a grocery store or a spring, if there is one nearby. Test your PH and Nitrogen levels at least once a week. you will probably need a filter or some plant or change water a lot or less fish.
