daughter wants more fish.? I just put him in the new 10 gallon tank about 3 days ago. I have read that contrary to popular belief, Bettas don't need solitary confinement and can live together with other small fish. I just need to know which species are best so that they won't harm eachother. Besides, the tank looks too big for him and he could use some company.
 
They can live with all sorts of fish but remember do not get a fish that looks like a male betta or it will be attacked
There are lots of fish that go great with bettas. Most tetras are great, some may nip at the fins of the betta. Stay away from danios and barbs, they will nip at the bettas fins. Most cichlids go great with bettas. Just stay away from fish with long flowing fins, like fancy guppies. Gouramis are hit and miss as tankmates. Don't pay attention to these nut who think bettas kill everything in sight, they most likely have never even tried keeping bettas with other fish before. It is common knowledge among true fishkeepers and breeders that bettas are great community fish. Finding a betta that does kill everything in sight, you have a rare specimen. Just stay away from fish with long flowing fins and you will have no problems.
 
Have you cycled the tank? If not, then nothing can be added until it has cycled. Bettas do not do well through the cycle.

If it is cycled then you are still going to struggle slightly. A trio of smaller species Corydoras could work, such as Sterbai or Panda BUT they MUST have a sand substrate, gravel damages their barbels, and really, they'd be happier in a bigger tank. There are pygmy/dwarf species of Cory but these need very mature tanks and can be very delicate.

A small shoaling group of 5 neons or glolight tetras might work BUT they will out compete the Betta to his dinner.

Its not really an issue of the Betta being aggressive, more the Betta being pushed around itself or other species just plain being happier in much larger tanks.
