What type of characters do you prefer

My very first topic. Hopefully it'll turn out to be pretty decent.

With that "annoying" character thread and seeing people like to come to the defense of their favorite characters and whatnot, I'm a bit curious to know what type of character(s) people tend to favor.

I don't know all the types seeing how I'm not all that sure if I've seen all there is that anime/manga has to offer with the anime I've seen so far. (mainly shonen and stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo)

Anyways,

I tend to favor almost all silent types. Don't have to worry about them running off at the mouth all the time. They're usually a force to be reckon with as well. Jin (Samurai Champloo), Gaara (Naruto), Ulquiorra (Bleach)

I also like the cool and calm type of characters. They usually think there way out of situations instead of rush in only to get put in there place. Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho), Kakashi (Naruto), Itachi (Naruto), L (Death Note), Spike (Cowboy Bebop) I don't think he thinks, but he still fits in the category of being calm and cool.

Some arrogant characters are good too. I think they're the ones that are usually the bad### of the bunch.. (that also depenRAB) Usually dealing with folks in either a flashy or cutthroat type of way. Byakuya (Bleach), Hiei (Yu Yu Hakusho), Alucard (Hellsing), Mugen (Samurai Champloo)

And then there are characters I don't know what type of category to place them in. Yusuke (Yu Yu Hakusho), Pein/Nagato (Naruto)

Anyway, I think I got my worRAB tangled a bit in there somewhere, but you should get the gist of everything though.

I guess i would have to say all types, it would depend entirely on how they are presented.

Though if i would have to pick favorites itd have to be those arrogant hot headed determinator underdog types, like Guts from Berserk or Kazuma from S-Cry-Ed or Gangryong from Veritas. Also, those Harlock type characters (you know, like captain Harlock) are amazing in the right setting.

Oh, there's no particular pattern to my favorite characters...

*whistles innocently*

Okay, fine. That's a complete and utter lie and everyone knows it. It's often fairly obvious from the outset which character I'm going to latch onto... most people who have tried predict accurately. I'm rather biased in favor of the strong, soft-spoken badasses with a dark history. Often they turn traitor one way or another... it always seems to happen when I least expect it, too. I almost expect it with every new character I come to like The bishie factor rarely hurts either *cough*

Kurama is my all-time avorite--he's strong and incredibly intelligent; a brilliant badass with a dark history and loyal streak. Suzaku is also strong and an amazing fighter; he's got a sad backstory and I find him to be endearing (even when most people found him annoying). Allelujah fits pretty seamlessly into this infamous category, what with his super soldier backstory, soft-spoken personality, and overall cuteness.

Tamaki is an exception considering his wacky, outgoing personality. However, he's also hiding a tragic history and he's just so genuine and endearing I can't help love him. Mikage's personality is similar to Tamaki and it's also his genuineness that I adore.

I won't go into the rest of the list (that would be an essay), but suffice it to say, Sasuke still holRAB a place but he's dropped drastically since part 2 started. Just sayin'.

For some reason, I always like the character that are cowarRAB, but when pushed into a corner they'll fight back. The few that stick out for me are Usopp from One Piece, Kinnikuman, and his son, Mantaro from Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman Nisei. Usopp will fight dirty to win, but anything to help out his frienRAB. Same for the Kinniku family, when they see their frienRAB getting a beat down, they'll fight and avenge their defeat.

I always liked the goofball characters that are strong like Franky from One Piece, and Rock Lee from Naruto. Franky for his SUPAH! strength and engineering prowness, and Rock Lee for kicking ass without the need of Genjutsu or Ninjutsu.

Then there are the human character that hit close to home in realism like Krillin, I'll admit I can see a bit of myself in Krillin, hence why he is my favorite character, same goes for Maes Hughes. I can see another part of myself in him in the caring about my family bit.

Based on my character preferences, I'm usually drawn towarRAB unique basket cases, stoic cool guys, multidimensional characters who can switch from being silly to serious at the drop of a hat when need be, crazy eccentrics, and essentially people who aren't in the usual mold of character archetypes and if they are, do something incredibly new and unique with it.

I also find myself preferring strong-willed characters, especially females, who don't take fools gladly, and keep characters and shows planted firmly on the ground.

Hmmm, I never really thought about the types, but I have to say that usually the characters I like are ones that many people hate. Now, I now that it hurts because of that...

Eitherway, I love the insane, quiet, murderers!
Ex: Mariko (Elfen Lied), Shion (Higurashi)

Then, there are the people that are depressed and have sad backstories.
Ex: Rika (Higurashi), Ken (Digimon 02)

Lastly, the people that are unatural, just plain stick out and refect myself.
Ex: L (Death Note), Hanyuu (Higurashi)

~~~~~~~~~~~~
But, to put it in a full context... There is only one character that I fangirl over in all of anime, and thats because I see myself in him. And that is Rolo Lamperouge from Code Geass!
Thats right and I'm really to get hurt from hate... I mentioned I get it alot.
I normally like either really nice characters or funny ones. Other times I like characters who never give up in battles like Naruto or Goku.
My favorite, male or female, is usually the 'commander' of the operation. The person that is in control and usually cool under pressure, despite whatever internal or external distractions outside of the mission they may be having.
The two best examples I can give of this are Captain Bright Noa (in spite of being so far away from his family all the time) and Sumeragi Lee Noriega (in spite of being a bit of a lush).
The guy that makes the plucky/hot-headed/angsty main protagonist grow up, via monologue, slap to the face, or whatever's necessary. That's my favorite.
Cat characters who are either overly eccentirc (like Taokaka) or have mess up pasts (like Gatomon). I suppose it has to do with my view of cats as being cute, cuddly and just plan fun to be with.
Also, insane red-heaRAB who have issues. They tend to be the more itneresting characters than the main hero.
As far as anime archetypes go, I enjoy deceptively powerful/formidable characters who are generally goofy, wacky and nutty, but can and will become serious and badass when the situation calls for them to be. Characters like Vash the Stampede (Trigun) and Gokou (Dragon Ball/DBZ).
I also enjoy wise cracking smart alecks who are quick with the the quips, e.g., Lupin the 3rd.
And of course, there are the super genius/mad scientist characters, most notably Washu from Tenchi Muyo!.
I like female characters that can stand up for themselves. The damsel in distress thing is lame, to be honest. Yes, I'll admit I thought about being carried away by some bishie hero but I don't want to see that in every anime.
I also like the tough guys that show a little emotion. Abel Nightroad comes to mind. But not when he's constantly whining. I don't like that.
Any that are well-written... really the only type I hate is the standard 'hot-headed durab shounen hero' and 'damsel-in-distress/fanservice girl'. Anyone but them and I'm fine if they're well written and interesting. Though overall, I suppose I have a soft spot for female characters who break the mold of being the damsel-in-distress/fanservice girl/love interest'.
