I plan to be a photographer, but i want to make sure i have a nice camera. I want to get a cheap like $500 or less. right now i have my eye on a Nikon Coolpix digital camera for $279.88 at walmart. is that going to be the best camera to START with? okay well all i want to know is what would be the best type of camera and how much it will cost.

The best type to learn on is an SLR, purists would say film, I say if they had digital when I was learning I would have saved myself a fortune.

For your money you should be able to pick up a very basic DSLR such as Nikons D40, or Sony a200.

Both are good cameras with all the essential functions you will need to learn about photography.

Don;t waste time or money on a compact camera. You want to get into the way of using manual settings and selective focus. An SLR is the way to go.

While it is possible to take some beautiful shots with a camera like the Nikon Coolpix, it can become VERY frustrating when you can't get it to do what you want. To have proper control over your photos you'll need a (D)SLR. Nikon D40 or a used Canon XTi would fit the bill. Don't be scared by these cameras as they can operate in full auto if you want.

you could get a film 35mm SLR if you REALLY wana learn photography, it will teach you to make every shot perfect, since you'll only have 36 per roll
