Well, you can go with either a standard road bike or if you want something a little more relaxed, try a hybrid style. A hybrid will typically have wider tires for comfort and less flats, and will allow you to attach racks and panniers more easily if you are planning long bike trips. They also have flat handle bars and are easier to shift and brake than road bikes. Road bikes are meant more for speed and are typically stiffer than a more casual style bike, and the lighter build makes hills a bit easier, but you still have to have the strength and endurance to climb, no matter what kind of bike you have. I'd go to a bike shop and try out both styles and see which you feel more comfortable on.
