I'm going to the university of minnesota, and I think I'm going to buy a bike for transportation. What type of bike should I get? Is a bmx bike a bad idea or no?

well a street bike, bmx or mountain don't wanna show up all sweating and nasty for class

You'll be laughed outa town on a BMX bike in the Twin Cities. Those are for juveniles. Its a very bike savvy town and a great place in general. Get a mountain bike(short commute and if you like to mountain bike or ride hard and jump curbs and such) or fitness/commuter(longer commute) with a good bike lock.

One great bike shop is "freewheelbike" on the West bank of the campus.

BMX bikes are not ideal. Why? No gears and it has a small chain ring, could be uncomfortable, and isn't very versatile.

I recommend a Hybrid bike. A combination between a road bikes 700c skinny tires but with an upright comfortable position. This allows a more faster ride than a mountain bikes fatter tires where you gain alot of rolling resistance. (Not good for city use)

Go to a local bike shop and ask about their Hybrid bikes. Get fitted. Fit is a important part of riding a bike. Without fit, you will loose efficiency. Shops will have all sorts of price ranges for every type of bikes. So go check them out.
