What type of air cleaner cover is best on a chevy 350 v8?

I've got a 1995 Chevy c1500 with a 350 V8 and I was wondering would it be better to have the stock air filter cover setup or to put an air filter cover set up thing that is the chome peice on the bottom and the chrome peice on the top and the round filter is exposed. Because I don't know if it'd allow more air into it or if itd be bad because the air would be hot from being in the engine bay or what. Also I was wondering if it was possible to convert it to a caurborator and what I'd need to do to do that and about how much it'd cost to do by myself or if I had a shop do it. Plus any other advice about how I could give make it have more torque and horsepower would be greatly appreciated but keep in mind I dont have that much money and I don't know a whole bunch about engines or transmissions and that stuff. But I do know some and I'm slowly teaching myself.

P.S. I want to know these things because I love muscle cars and sleepers and even though the pickup has a nice amount of power and torque I'm trying to get more to hopefully bring it to the strip. And like I said I don't have a bunch of money because after all I'm a 17 year old with a teenager's job. But I love real cars which I don't know how many kids my age do anymore. A lot of them like the cars with 6bangers but they dont smell, sound, look, or take off from the line like real cars do.

P.P.S. And any idea how much it'd cost to get the truck converted to manual? Because I've always thought of muscle cars as manual even though theres some real nice automatics out there that squeak the tires each time they shit going down the 1/4th mile :).

Thanks in advance
Arthur
