What TV show had the opening with a black maid covering her face with a mask?

A co-worker and I can't remember the name of the show that had an opening segment where an African-American maid initially hid her face with a mask on a stick. She was a heavy-set woman who worked for a white family. I think it was shot in the late 1950's - early 1960's.

I saw the show once and seem to remember her being the brains, glue, and catalyst of the show. It centered around how she helped the family members get out of awkward situations, then melded back into the background. Each family member would never admit she they liked and respected her more than they would publicly admit. But the maid knew how they really felt and that kept her going into the next episode.

Can somebody please help me out? It's driving us nuts!
